Dish with floral decoration

This finely potted dish has underglaze black painted decoration of a large floral motif on the inside and stylised leaf-like motifs around the outer walls. The best known kilns north of the famous ceramic-production centres at Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai, were found in 1933 at Kalong. At least 100 kilns are known to have existed, producing underglaze black, celadon and other monochrome wares in black, brown and green lead-glaze. The clays at Kalong were of high quality and production is thought to have taken place between 1300 and 1550. Kalong wares were made mainly for domestic use, although it appears that some celadon dishes found in Indonesia may be attributed to the Kalong kilns.
