This dish belongs to a collection of blue and white porcelain used for food offerings on an ancestral altar. It is painted with motifs of butterflies and flowers of the four seasons, motifs commonly found on Nonyaware but rarely found on blue and white porcelain. Most blue and white porcelain feature highly stylised and crudely painted sweet pea flowers which the Peranakans refer to as ‘batik'.
