This is a book written by M.T.H. Perelaer and W.A. van Rees. Apart from textual information, it also contains over 100 illustrations and prints depicting the landscapes, architecture, occupations and costumes of the various ethnic communities in the Dutch East Indies in the 19th century. Some of the illustrations in the book were drawn by Dutch painter, J.C. Rappard. He arrived in the Dutch East Indies in 1842 and specialised in painting topographical views and scenes of European social life in the colony.
