This ceremonial Tai Lue banner is woven with a supplementary weft design comprising a red and indigo blue geometric pattern. Buddhist motifs are often combined with ancient animistic motifs in these cloths. These are thought to originate from the prehistoric Bronze Age cultures such as Dong Son (500 BCE-300 CE) in Southeast Asia. Ceremonial textiles like this piece are often donated to hang at temples. The Tai migrated sometime during the 13th century into Southeast Asia through Vietnam to Laos and Thailand, from the Yangtze River region and the southern provinces of China. They also travelled north and west into Myanmar.
