This print by Le Quoc Viet depicts the traditional wedding procession from the bride’s house to the groom’s. The bride, sitting in a sedan chair, is hidden from view, as are the entourage, who appears as if weighted down by their finery. This sombre scene perhaps reflects the sense of cultural and spiritual emptiness in the fast changing economic landscape.Calligraphic works are the most recent in a growing body of work by the artist Le Quoc Viet, one of a few contemporary artists who is seriously engaging with the cultural history of Vietnam. Viet spent 10 years living in a monastery researching the history of Buddhist woodblock printed texts and studying the Han Nom written language. His works are now collected by museums around the world.
