As with most cultures, wedding garments represent possibly the most elaborate dress of the Peranakan community. While the wedding garments of the Peranakan Chinese community of Southeast Asia up till the early 20th century consistently reflect strong Chinese influence, there are also important regional, for example Singapore/Malacca, Penang, Sumatra, Java, stylistic differences. In this period, the Peranakan Chinese bride and groom would wear a few different robes for the different days of the wedding; resulting thus in the wide variety of wedding garments.Peranakan grooms were photographed to wear imitations of Chinese court dress with rank badges from the mid-19th century. In Indonesia, they often add a scalloped cape decorated with elaborate tekat embroidery.
