Mother-of-pearl inlaid tray

The inlaid work on this tray shows an elaborate representation of Saint Peter’s Basilica and Square and the bordering colonnades in Rome. Further inlaid work on the foreground shows various figures in period costumes. The depiction of the trees and shrubs has strong Asian influences depicting semi-tropical bamboos, plum trees and maples. The outer border shows various types of fruits and gourds interspersed by butterflies. An inscription on the foreground reads: “Vue de l’Eglise de st Pierre a Rome”. The rim of the tray is decorated with a key-fret and floral border. The tray sits on four short wooden legs.
