Coffee pot

This is possibly a silver coffee pot. It has a domed convex fluted cover. The body is repoussed with motifs of flowers and birds. These are auspicious Chinese motifs favoured by the Peranakan Chinese. For example, birds are considered noble creatures. They are also symbols of freedom because of their ability to fly. Its intricate designs suggest this could have been a specially commissioned object associated with the traditional Peranakan Chinese wedding. To make this piece of silverware, the local Peranakan consumer could have approached the immigrant Chinese silversmiths, who were then commissioned to produce such objects.
