A pair of gilded wall cupboards

These are the doors for a pair of wall cupboards which are known as ‘piak tu’ in Baba Malay. These cupboards were usually commissioned in pairs and were built into the walls of the traditional Peranakan Chinese terrace house. They were usually found in kitchens and dining rooms, with dining room ones usually more elaborately decorated. Part of the family's collection of Nonyaware was usually stored in such cupboards. Like the fence door or ‘pintu pagar’, ‘piak tu’ were also features of the house that hinted at the wealth of the family.
