Page girl garment

This is the ceremonial garment worn by the page girl in a Peranakan wedding. It is T-shaped with straight cut sleeves that are broad and long and is modelled after the Ming Period costumes. The sleeves are decorated with parallel rows of embroidered designs and the front of the garment features fish, which appears like a carp, as the central motif. This fish symbolises harmony, marital happiness and reproduction. Most garments worn during a Peranakan wedding were manufactured in China by skilled, professional embroiderers before being shipped to their Straits Chinese customers.
