Pocket watch that belonged to a civilian victim of the Japanese Occupation

This pocket watch was one of the relics that belonged to the civilian victims of the Japanese Occupation. It was excavated along with the victims’ remains from more than 60 mass burial sites all over the island by the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and other local ethnic organisations with the government’s support between 1963 and 1966. The remains were then put inside urns and placed on the Civilian Memorial’s foundation platform along Beach Road before a proper burial. The then Prime Minister, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew unveiled the Monument on 15 February 1967, the 25th anniversary of the Occupation.
