Wisma Indonesia (also known as Indonesia House) was completed in 1964 on a site along Orchard Road that was leased by an Indonesian company, Yayasan Wisma Indonesia, from the Ngee Ann Kongsi. The building’s design was a blend of modern and traditional Indonesian architecture and served as the premises of the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore. During the Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation (1963-1966), the building was seized by the Central Government in Kuala Lumpur and was only returned to the Indonesians in 1965 following Singapore’s separation from Malaysia. After subsequent renovation works, the building was also used to house a hotel, restaurant, theatre and shops. In 1983, the building was demolished to make way for a shopping-cum-office complex (now known as Wisma Atria) following a cash and land-swap deal between the Indonesian government and Wisma Development. The Indonesia Embassy was shifted to a new complex at Chatsworth Road as part of the deal.
