The University of Singapore was first known as the University of Malaya when it was formed in 1949 as a result of the merger between the King Edward VII College of Medicine and Raffles College. In 1980, the Singapore government decided that a single university would enjoy economies of scale, stronger departments in every field of study, and greater opportunities for multi-disciplinary teaching and research. Thus, the University of Singapore was again merged with Nanyang University to become the present National University of Singapore. In recognition of their significance as symbols of the campus’s past, six buildings from the Bukit Timah Campus (formerly Raffles College) were given the status of National Monuments in 2009.
