The temple was established in the 19th century by a wealthy Indian, Narasimhaloo Naidu, and was the first temple in Singapore built for the worshippers of Lord Vishnu. The original temple was a simple brick building with modest decorations. The five-tiered entrance tower or ‘gopuram’ was constructed in 1977 and completed in 1979. Costing $300,000, the ‘gopuram’ was funded by wealthy businessman, P. Govindasamy Pillay. The temple was gazetted as a national monument in 1978.
