As Cavenagh Bridge became increasingly unable to cope with the heavy load of motor cars and electric trams at the turn of the century, the heavy traffic was diverted to the newer Anderson Bridge, opened on 12 March 1910. It was named after Sir John Anderson, Governor of the Straits Settlements from 1904 to 1911.
