This postcard, part of a set of 38, shows Prince Edward of Wales (later King Edward VIII and Duke of Windsor) unveiling the Straits Settlements War Memorial on 31 March 1922. The Memorial, which faced the old Courthouse, commemorated men from the Straits Settlements (Singapore, Malacca and Penang) who had died in combat in WWI. This unveiling ceremony at the Harbour Front was part of the two-day visit the prince paid to Singapore in 1922. Singapore had been one of the stops among the prince’s 1921-22 Eastern tour, along with India, Hong Kong and Japan. This eight-month tour was one of the most important diplomatic voyages the prince made on behalf of the British monarchy. It provided a comprehensive assessment of the social and political situation in various parts of Asia that had the closest links with the British Empire.
