This postcard shows the battle cruiser, H.M.S. Renown, on which Prince Edward of Wales (later King Edward VIII and Duke of Windsor) travelled during his 1921-22 Eastern tour. It docked at Johnson’s Pier for two days when the prince visited Singapore in April 1922. This was part of an eight-month tour which also saw him calling on India, Hong Kong and Japan. It was one of the most important diplomatic voyages the prince took on behalf of the British monarchy. The tour provided a comprehensive assessment of the social and political situation in various parts of Asia that had the closest links with the British Empire. Apart from the Eastern tour, the Prince of Wales also travelled onboard the H.M.S. Renown for two other Empire tours. The battleship went on to participate in the Second World War, and was only retired in 1948.
