‘Keramat Habib Noh’ is Malay for ‘grave of Habib Noh’. A ‘keramat’ is usually the burial place of a Muslim holy man or a highly venerated individual. Born in 1788, Habib Noh bin Muhamad Al-Habshi was a prominent mystic who moved to Singapore in 1819. Habib Noh was revered not only for his spiritual powers, but also for his compassion to others. He died in 1866 and was buried at the top of Mount Palmer. A structure was erected over the tomb, with a flight of 52 steps leading up to it. The tomb was refurbished in 1890 and a mosque (present-day Haji Muhammad Salleh Mosque) was constructed facing it in 1903.
