As its name suggests, Singapore Chinese Swimming Club is a club for the Chinese community. It was incepted in 1905 by a group of Chinese men largely because they were excluded from the swimming clubs in Singapore which were at this time predominantly for the European community. The Club was rebuilt in 1951 with a full-sized Olympic swimming pool due to the overwhelming number of members and formally opened by then Governor of Singapore, Sir Franklin Gimson. The Club grew in popularity after it staged a charity event featuring a 25 -member Russian Pearl Water Ballet Troupe. One of its pioneer members was Mr Lee Chin Koon, the father of Singapore's Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew.
