Prominent landmarks lining the busy Collyer Quay waterfront in the 1960s included (from left to right): the Moorish-inspired Alkaff Arcade, which was the first indoor shopping centre in Singapore; the former office premises of the Asiatic Petroleum Co. called Clifford House; the 15-storey Shell House that opened in 1960, which housed Shell employees and other tenants; the Maritime Building and Hongkong and Shanghai Bank Building with their neoclassical facades; and the Fullerton Building, which was opened in 1928 and subsequently used to house government offices and the General Post Office.
