Completed in 1956 to link two stretches of the new Nicoll Highway, Merdeka Bridge spans over the Kallang Basin, near the mouths of the Kallang and Rochor Rivers. The bridge symbolised Singapore's freedom and independence (“merdeka” means freedom in Malay) and commemorated Singapore’s departure from British Crown Colony status to internal self-government in 1955.
