The National Stadium was officially opened on 21 July 1973 by then Prime Minister Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. The 50,000-seat sports stadium was completed in time for the 7th Southeast Asian Peninsular Games in September 1973. The stadium hosted many other local and international events such as the Southeast Asian Games, Malaysian Cup, music concerts and the National Day Parade. The National Day Parade is held every year on 9 August to commemorate the momentous occasion when Singapore became an independent sovereign nation on 9 August 1965.
