Founded in March 1991, Zouk (a French Caribbean term for ‘party’) began operations out of three restored godowns situated along Jiak Kim Street on the southern bank of the Singapore River. The popular nightclub expanded to comprise four distinct zones: Zouk, which was the main dance floor located in the centre of the club; Phuture, which was established in 1996 and featured a long bar and windows overlooking the main dance floor; Velvet Underground, a separate section of the club that was launched in 1994 to cater to young executives; and the Wine Bar, which featured outdoor and indoor seating for patrons.
