View of the Central Business District and Elgin Bridge from North Bridge Road

The original Elgin Bridge was an iron structure erected in 1863 across the Singapore River and named after Lord Elgin, Governor General of India (1862-1863). It was demolished in 1927 to make way for a new concrete double bridge (centre foreground) with the same name that was completed in 1929. Designed by Cavalieri Rodolfo Nolli, the new bridge had high arches with slender columns and could accommodate both pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
