Opened in late 1982, the 12.8-hectare Woodlands Town Garden was then the latest and largest in a series of parks built for large public housing estates known as new towns. Constructed at a cost of $8.5 million, the garden’s attractions included: a playground that was designed based on characters in the Malay folktale ‘The Kanchil’, which is about how a kanchil (mousedeer) tricks a tiger and a crocodile; a 2.5-hectare natural pond surrounded by lush greenery; seven Chinese pavilions; six Malay stilt huts; a carp pond with an arched bridge across it; and an open-air amphitheatre for band performances.
