Postcard showing His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales inspecting troops at the Tanglin Barracks

This postcard shows Prince Edward of Wales (later King Edward VIII and Duke of Windsor) inspecting the 2nd Battalion of the Middlesex regiment (of which the Prince was colonel-in-chief) at the Tanglin Barracks during his visit to Singapore in 1922. This visit to Singapore was part of an eight-month Eastern tour the prince took in 1921 to 1922, during which he also called on India, Malaya, Hong Kong and Japan. It was one of the most important diplomatic voyages that Prince Edward made on behalf of the British monarchy as it enabled a comprehensive survey of the social and political situation in various parts of Asia that had close links with the British Empire. A total of 16 such Empire tours were made by the prince between 1919 and 1935. The prince left for Hong Kong after spending two days in Singapore.
