Hong Kong Teochew opera actress Tan Chor Hui

Tan Chor Hui is a Hong Kong Teochew opera actress famous amongst Singaporean opera buffs in the 1960s and 1970s. When the Cultural Revolution broke out in 1966, arts production that was deemed to be anti-socialist was banned in China. Fortunately for local audiences, Hong Kong opera troops were not affected and performed in Singapore on a regular basis. Among the popular artistes, Tan was noted for her cross-gender performances, especially roles of suave and romantic young male leads.
