Zhang Xiao Ying took part in the first edition of radio station Rediffusion’s Chinese pop singing competition in 1965 – during which she sang live at the National Theatre – and was crowned champion. There was never any doubt about Zhang’s popularity as she became the best-selling female singer of her time. Some of her well-known songs include ‘Sange Meng ‘ (Three Dreams) and ‘Wangri De Qingyi’ (Affections of the Past).
