Hanging

This embroidered panel is made up of two sections. There is a narrow, upper rectangular panel and a lower but broader panel extending from the bottom of the top panel to the base. The larger panel contains the main decorative motifs. These include a pair of phoenix, a peony tree in full bloom as well as insects like the grasshopper. A pair of phoenix usually represents the wedding couple and is a symbol of marital bliss. Peonies are symbols of wealth and prosperity while insects represent fertility and abundance. This is set against a green background, which is the colour that represents fertility. A large panel like this was possible a door hanging used to decorate the entrance to the wedding chamber, hence the several auspicious motifs.
