This kidney-shaped container or 'cricket box' was not used for keeping crickets as was done in China. Instead, it was used for soap, jewellery or other small items that were part of the Nonya's dressing table. Soap boxes often have a perforated lid to allow the soap to dry after use. This piece would have been part of a range of tiny porcelain jars and boxes included in a Peranakan bride's wedding gifts.
