This elaborate headdress is composed of several individual gilt silver pieces many of which are decorated with kingfisher feathers. It also features the auspicious Chinese motifs of Pek Sian(Eight Immortals) and the three stellar gods of Hock, Lock and Siew. The head is considered the most sacred part of the body, in contrast to the feet, which are considered the least sacred. As such, it was common to find items to be used on the head are often made of gold. Headdresses are one of the only places where deity motifs would be found on garments. Auspicious and protective motifs of deities were frequently employed on Peranakan wedding headdress to protect the wearer form malevolent spiritual forces as they went through the various wedding rites.
