This headdress is a pale blue velvet or felt cap worn by the bridegroom during a Peranakan wedding. It has a decorative finial at the top comprising of a large stone and smaller bronze circular balls at its bottom. This cap was usually worn together with a loose, long flowing robe that reached to the ankle, over which was worn a long-sleeved tunic. These were made in the designs consistent with those during the Ming dynasty, though the dynasty was replaced by the Qing dynasty after 1644. However, why the Straits Chinese chose to stick with wedding costumes in Ming Period designs instead of those of the Ching dynasty remains a matter of speculation. By early 20th century, Peranakan men started to wear European suits for weddings.
