Serangoon Road Kick-A-Poo Storage and Development from Lucas Jodogne's 'Singapore Views on the Urban Landscape' series

This photograph shows a storage facility at Serangoon Road which housed bottles and cans of Kick-A-Poo, a popular carbonated beverage which had originated from the United States. In the background, one can see construction works in progress. The juxtaposition of an imported product against an evolving landscape is a clear indication of the Belgian photographer’s choice subject matter—landscapes in transition. This photograph is part of a collection titled ‘Singapore Views on the Urban Landscape’, where the city-state of Singapore is described as a ‘bodiless dragon’. This is due to the rapid development of its economy and urban landscape, as well as the flux of people, capital and products from the international economy, despite its small size and the lack of a hinterland. Jodogne aims to capture the scale and impact of this development, which he describes as ‘rapid, organised and massive’.
