Mjd Darul Makmur at Yishun Ring Road from Lucas Jodogne's 'Singapore Views on the Urban Landscape' series

This photograph shows a Muslim mosque, the Masjid Darul Makmir, located in the satellite new town of Yishun in the background, against a mobile carnival with street stalls and amusement rides. The photograph was taken from the vantage point of the sixth floor of Block 225 at Nee Soon East. The juxtaposition of the traditional religious architecture and the bustling scene of the street market paints the scene of an urban landscape in transition. This is also the preferred subject matter for Belgian photographer Lucas Jodogne. This photograph is part of a collection titled ‘Singapore Views on the Urban Landscape’, where Singapore is described as a ‘bodiless dragon’. This is due to the rapid development of its economy and urban landscape, as well as the constant flux of people and capital despite its small size and the lack of a hinterland. Jodogne aimed to capture the scale and impact of this development, which he described as ‘rapid, organised and massive’.
