This postcard shows prominent Central Business District landmarks on the Collyer Quay waterfront such as: the Maritime Building with its distinctive tower and neoclassical facade (first from right); the 15-storey Shell House that was opened in 1960 to serve as the oil company’s headquarters (second from right); Clifford Pier and the Change Alley Ariel Plaza with its revolving tower (centre foreground); and the Asia Insurance Building with its stepped roof (partially covered by the aerial tower). In the distance are the skyscrapers along Shenton Way, which was a road built in the 1930s on land reclaimed from the Telok Ayer Basin and originally called Raffles Way. The thoroughfare was renamed in 1951 after Sir Shenton Thomas, the former Governor of the Straits Settlements (1934-1946). By the 1970s, the area around Shenton Way had been developed into Singapore’s main financial district.
