The members shown include: John Ede (Member for Tanglin and father of the donor, Mrs. Anita Benson, Lee Kuan Yew (Member for Tanjong Pagar), Lim Yew Hock (Member for Havelock), Lim Chin Siong (Member for Bukit Timah), David Marshall (Member for Cairnhill), R. Jumabhoy (Member for Telok Ayer), and Chew Swee Kee (Member for Whampoa).The Rendell Commission recommended the establishment of a Legislative Assembly comprising of elected members in 1953. This was a step towards self-government for Singapore, which was then a British colony. The elections were held in 1955 and won by the Labour Party led by David Marshall, who became the first Chief Minister. 158,075 out of 300,199 eligible voters participated in the elections. Other political parties that contested the elections included the Progressive Party, the Democratic Party, the UMNO-MCA alliance, and the PAP. Nomination day was on 28 February 1955, Polling Day on 2 April 1955, and the Assembly was established on 22 April 1955.
