The Malabar Mosque, also known as the Golden Dome Mosque, is situated at the corner of Victoria Street and Jalan Sultan on a site that was formerly a Malabar Muslim cemetery dating back to 1819. The Malabar Muslims were originally from Kerala in India and many came over to Singapore in the early 19th century as textile and jewellery traders. The foundation stone of the mosque was laid on 10 April 1956 by Tuan Syed Alwi Adnan, the Mufti of Johor, on behalf of the Sultan of Johor. The construction project was managed by the Malabar Muslim Jama-ath association and funded with donations from the public. Officially opened in 1963, the mosque was designed in a traditional style and featured an octagonal tower topped with a golden dome. The mosque underwent a renovation, completed in 1995, that saw the addition of blue and white lapis lazuli tiles to its interior and exterior walls.
