This silver square Qur'anic amulet container with a rectangular lid is missing its suspension chains. It is decorated with coloured enamels and floral and foliate motifs in repoussé. This amuletic container was worn for protective reasons and probably used to hold either a miniature Qur’an or a piece of paper with a Qur’anic verse. For Muslims, the Qur'an is the visual embodiment of the Word of God and is considered sacred. This particular container highlights the perceived protective powers of the Qur’an to Muslims. Muslims also wear talismanic shirts and caps for spiritual protection.
