Elbow rest

This example shows a finely embroidered imperial elbow rest in satin stich with a Peking knot design on the top. It is decorated on four sides with auspicious symbols that include musk mallow sprays and angular scrolls in shades of blue, green, yellow, coral, white and fine gold-wrapped thread. The greenish-yellow colour of the satin is typical of early 18th century. The charming informality of the decoration suggests that it was made for the private apartments of an imperial consort.
