This ivory double-pipe case is covered with mica and overlaid with sheets of intricately carved and pierced ivory. It has continuous design of scrolling leaves and flowers within dotted geometric borders with carvings of winged cherub heads and dancing figures amongst them. Its depiction shows the influence of European baroque design. The ivory panels are secured with brass pins onto the wooden case. This ivory double-pipe case is one of the finest made in Sri Lanka for export to Europe where they were highly sought after. Many Europeans travellers in the 16th century have accounted on the high standards of Sri Lankan ivory carvers.
