Charles Stringer, President of the Singapore Cricket Club, was credited with introducing lawn tennis to Singapore in 1875, two years before the first Wimbledon tournament commenced in Britain. Tennis soon became a popular sport, especially with women, leading to the foundation of the Ladies’ Lawn Tennis Club at Dhoby Ghaut in May 1884, as seen from the corner of Stamford Road in this photograph. By October 1884, a fixed pavilion had been built. It was painted and furnished at the cost of $632, and the club had seven courts which hosted regular tournaments.
