Standing Still #23

Standing Still is a series of 116 c-type photographs made by Gill during her travels across the Malaysian countryside over a period of three years (2000-2003). Taken in the aftermath of the 1997 financial crisis, when numerous building projects lay vacant and wanting, the artist describes the simultaneous encounter and confrontation with each of these sites, as “a place in time, where, one might say, the past lies in ruins, unkempt and untended, and the future also somehow has been abandoned and has started to crumble. No way forward, no way back.”
