Nonyaware powder boxes came in a variety of shapes and colours. In traditional Peranakan homes, face powder was the only type of cosmetic that a Peranakan lady could use. Perfume and lipstick were strictly forbidden. The face powder was often mixed with scented rose water, mixed into a paste and applied to the face with a face towel.
