Trolley buses took the place of electric trams as a mode of transport from the mid-1920s to the 1930s. Electric trams were first introduced in Singapore in 1905 but were unpopular due to the high fares. The Singapore Electric Tramways Limited, the company that ran the network of trams, also posted losses due to the heavy costs incurred for maintaining the tracks and generators needed to power the trams. Singapore Electric Tramways Limited was dissolved and it eventually became the Singapore Traction Company in 1925. It operated a new system of trackless trolley buses. All electric trams were phased out by 1927.
