This is a postcard of the British Prince Edward of Wales (later King Edward VIII and Duke of Windsor), who visited Singapore in 1922 as part of the eight-month Eastern tour he undertook. It is part of a set of 38 postcards detailing the visit to Singapore, Malaya and Hong Kong. The Prince travelled a total of almost 41 000 miles to visit parts of the British Empire in the Far East, including India, Singapore, Malaya and Hong Kong. He also spent a month in Japan. The Eastern tour of 1921 to 1922 was one of the most important diplomatic and political voyages that the Prince made on behalf of the British monarchy. It enabled a comprehensive assessment of the social and political situation of the various parts of Asia that had the closest links with the British Empire. HRH the Prince of Wales went on a total of 16 such tours to various parts of the Commonwealth from 1919 to 1935. He travelled on the battleship H.M.S. ‘Renown’ during several of these tours, including the one to Singapore in 1922.
