The Capitol Theatre was built in 1929 at the junction of Stamford Road and North Bridge Road. It was one of the very few air-conditioned theatres in Singapore in its early days and served as a theatre until it was acquired by the Shaw Organisation in 1946 and was converted into the Capitol Cinema with 1686 seats. This became a popular venue for dates and social gatherings. The Capitol Cinema also staged many local and foreign performances before the movies were screened. In the late 1980s, the building underwent a series of renovations and was reopened as the Capitol Building in 1992. It eventually screened its last movie in December 1998. The characteristic neo-classical architecture of the building has rendered it a national monument amidst one of the country’s busiest districts.
