The Hotel Royal was opened in September 1971. It was one of the first high-rise buildings to go up in the Newton area. The hotel was renamed the Hotel Royal Ramada in 1972 after a franchise contract was reached with the Ramada group, operator of motel chain Ramada Inns, in the USA. The Ramada chain pulled out of the venture in 1979, and the hotel subsequently reverted back to its original name. The property is owned by the Hotel Royal Group.
