Originally called the Hotel Tai-Pan, the Tai-Pan Ramada Hotel was officially opened in April 1986 by the President of the Ramada Hotel Group, Jerry Manion, after undergoing extensive refurbishment works that lasted three years. Owned by the Jack Chia-MPH Group, the hotel was renamed following a management agreement concluded with the Ramada Group. In 1989, the hotel was bought over by Chinese businessman Paul Sun and was relaunched as the Allson Hotel. Singapore-based hospitality group Hotel Royal acquired the Queen Street Wing of the hotel in 2004 and subsequently opened a new hotel on the site, called the Hotel Grand Pacific.
