Situated at the start of Singapore’s main Orchard Road shopping belt, the Orchard Hotel was one of the earliest luxury hotels to be completed in the area. Owned by the Orchard Hotel (S) Ltd, which was a subsidiary of Pan Electric Industries, the hotel opened in 1960. Major construction works were carried out in 1978 to replace the original four-storey structure with a taller building. The new 19-storey hotel was officially opened by Acting Social Affairs Minister Mr. Ahmad Mattar in August 1981. The hotel was bought over by City Developments (CDL) in 1986 and is now part of the Millennium & Copthorne Hotels (M&C) group, which was acquired by CDL in 1995.
