The President Merlin Hotel was part of the President Hotel and Shopping Complex project at Kitchener Road. The project was developed by Malaysian company South Union and consisted of two shopping centres and a hotel. The President Shopping Centre was officially opened in 1971 while the hotel opened its doors in 1978. The property was sold to United Overseas Land in 1989 for $65 million at an auction, and was subsequently renamed the New Park Hotel in 1990. The hotel underwent major refurbishment works in 2006 and was relaunched as the Parkroyal Hotel in 2007.
